# Charitable organisations & care

**So caring for others does not come at your team’s expense.**

OQM helps charitable organisations and care teams develop leadership, handovers and collaboration. Support the people who care for others, with the Business or Christian questionnaire that fits your team.

## The questionnaire should fit the team, not just the provider.

Care services, ministries and schools include people with different beliefs. You have a choice. A Christian identity does not oblige you to ask personal faith questions.

### Business version

Worldview-neutral: leadership, structures, shared values and collaboration. Also for charitable and nonprofit organisations, not only businesses.

[Discuss the Business version](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Christian version

Explicitly addresses gifts, life of faith, spiritual culture and service. For teams where personal faith statements fit the shared purpose and working context.

[Discuss the Christian version](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

We clarify language, voluntary participation, confidentiality and reporting first. Questionnaires are not arbitrarily mixed or rewritten. Different versions are not automatically directly comparable.

The example profile above and eight characteristics below illustrate the Christian version. Your preference for the initial conversation does not commit you to a questionnaire.

## A humane mission. A working day that asks a lot.

Just before handover, a colleague calls in sick, a family is waiting for an update and documentation is unfinished. A new team member also needs support. More personal commitment alone cannot resolve situations like these.

### The rota lasts until the first absence

Last-minute cover becomes routine. The same colleagues fill gaps while managers keep weighing continuity of care against staff relief.

### Too many interfaces, too little clarity

Care, support, housekeeping, administration and volunteers share a purpose. Yet information gets lost between shifts, visits and responsibilities.

### New colleagues are expected to cope immediately

Induction happens on the side. New and internationally recruited staff have to learn routines, language and team culture at once; experienced colleagues carry the extra support.

### Supporting others with little support yourself

Distress, dying, conflict and time pressure can linger. When concerns go unspoken and the mission statement feels distant from daily work, the job takes extra energy.

## Where is your team losing energy it needs for people?

For home-care services, residential elder care, hospice and palliative teams, and charitable advice, support and disability services. Start with a manageable working unit, not automatically the entire provider. These are discussion examples, not promised outcomes.

### Rota planning: more than filling gaps

When personal plans keep changing, willingness to help can become a permanent obligation. Dialogue explores how staff experience participation, accessible leadership and fairness. Clarify which decisions and feedback routines can improve.

A first step could be agreeing responsibility when someone is absent and trialling one change in a unit or home-care team. Insufficient staffing or funding still requires separate action.

[Discuss our rota planning](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Handovers: turn information into a dependable routine

An observation does not reach the next shift. A callback gets lost between care and administration. A volunteer is unsure of their boundaries. OQM examines experienced structures and collaboration, not an individual practitioner’s performance.

Discuss one handover point: who owns it, how are questions resolved and when does feedback arrive? Clinical standards and documentation obligations remain with the responsible professionals.

[Clarify our handovers](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Induction: belonging takes more than a first day

New colleagues need orientation without having to justify every question. Different qualifications, languages and experience can be resources when responsibilities and support are clear.

One possible development task: agree named contacts and brief feedback conversations, then review what works after a few weeks. OQM does not replace qualification requirements, professional supervision or language training.

[Help new colleagues settle in](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Pressure: carers should not carry everything alone

Wanting to do right by someone can collide with limited time and conflicting expectations. The organisational approach asks about support, approachable leaders and a culture in which difficulties can be raised.

Clarify what feedback is missing and where professional support, supervision or other help is needed. Immediate risks and health concerns belong in the appropriate safeguarding and care pathways without delay.

[Discuss support for our team](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Values: a Christian provider, a diverse team

Dignity, respect and dependable help can be shared by people with different beliefs. A Christian provider does not automatically make personal faith questions appropriate for every team.

Choose the Christian or Business version with us. A neutral questionnaire may better suit a mixed-worldview team without abandoning the provider’s Christian identity. Questions are not rewritten or mixed ad hoc.

[Find the right version for us](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

### Change: start small enough to act

Another report adds little if nobody can implement it. Agree a clear remit with leaders, staff and, where relevant, staff representatives: one defined unit, understandable feedback and a few priorities.

For example, change one handover routine together, name its owner and agree a review date. A later profile complements everyday observation; different questionnaire versions are not assumed to form an equivalent measurement series.

[Plan a manageable first step](https://oqm-international.com/en/churches/charitable-organisations-care/#contact)

OQM offers organisational development and collaboration. It does not replace specialist care advice, staffing assessment, a funding solution, clinical review or required occupational risk assessment. It is not evidence of improved care outcomes.

## The weakest characteristic sets the limit.

A barrel can only hold as much water as its shortest stave allows. Good programmes help little if people burn out or conflicts go unspoken. OQM finds that shortest stave – your minimum factor.

Instead of working on everything at once, you know where the next step will do the most good.

## Eight characteristics shape how healthy your community is.

Ten questions per characteristic. They show how staff and volunteers actually experience working together – not whether a programme exists for it.

### Empowering leadership

Develop people, provide direction and share responsibility meaningfully.

Who could take responsibility if leaders did not have to make every decision themselves?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “The person responsible for my area involves me in decisions that are relevant to me.”

### Gift-oriented contribution

Match gifts with responsibilities and make induction and development possible.

Which task fits a person’s gifts, and which continues simply out of habit?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “The tasks I do match my abilities.”

### Passionate life of faith

Recognise faith as a source of strength and direction in everyday life and a shared calling.

How does our shared spiritual calling connect with the everyday experience of our work?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “The spiritual calling of our organisation motivates me in my everyday life too.”

### Effective structures

Arrange responsibilities, resources and communication to serve the calling.

Which decision or handover process would support the team rather than hold it back?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “In my team, tasks are distributed so that the work runs smoothly.”

### Internalised values & culture

Recognise Christian identity in decisions, community and living traditions.

Where can people experience our values in action rather than only in a mission statement?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “The spiritual atmosphere in my team is one of the reasons I enjoy working here.”

### Holistic teams

Consider people’s personal, social and spiritual needs alongside their work.

What does our team need, beyond a completed work plan, to remain a supportive community?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “In my team we trust each other.”

### Need-oriented service

Bring practical love of neighbour and professional quality together in service.

Whom does our work serve, and do we listen closely enough to what those people need?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “We want to give our best in our respective areas of work.”

### Loving relationships

Encourage reliability, acceptance and an honest, reconciling approach to conflict.

Can someone raise a difficult issue without losing belonging or appreciation?

Sample question · translated from the German version: “In our team, conflicts are resolved in a positive way.”

## Four steps from question to priority.

1. **Discover**: In an initial conversation we choose the Business or Christian version and agree the unit, participants, voluntary participation and confidentiality.

2. **Survey**: Staff and volunteers answer the 80 questions anonymously on a phone or computer.

3. **Understand**: The profile is ready as soon as the survey closes. Together you identify strengths and the minimum factor.

4. **Act and look again**: You agree on a few concrete steps. After 10 to 12 months a follow-up survey shows what has changed.

## What progress could look like in everyday work.

### Agreements people can rely on

Agree clear responsibilities for absence cover and involve staff in routines you can change. Name staffing gaps rather than interpreting them as a lack of dedication.

### Handovers with clear ownership

Teams agree which information belongs with whom and when. Trial a small change at one interface and review it together.

### Induction has a place in the working day

Agree named contacts, learning time and feedback. Check whether new colleagues actually experience that support.

### Values become visible in how people are treated

Leaders make room for feedback, boundaries and different perspectives. Review together whether the agreed changes work in practice.

## The right questions. A clear picture of collaboration.

Business or Christian: we choose the instrument for your actual team. The same prices apply as for businesses.

### OQM 80 profile in the appropriate version

Eight factors, strengths and the minimum factor for your unit. Questions and factor names follow the agreed version.

### Comparison profile

Compare teams, sites or two time points within the same version. Different questionnaire versions cannot simply be compared side by side.

### Action Guide

Prioritised steps for the lowest scores – for leadership, teams and staff.

### OQM Health, if you need it

The assessment of psychological strain for your employed staff.

## What OQM costs for your organisation.

The same prices as for businesses: an annual package as the basis, plus the reports you need. Work out your price yourself – recommended prices, plus applicable taxes.

## Why OQM

> “Growth cannot be “made”. But environmental influences that could impair it can be reduced as far as possible. If this succeeds, growth happens.”
>
> Dr. Stephan Wesely (1967–2026), Translated from: Stephan Wesely, Dialogisch orientiertes Organisches Qualitätsmanagement (OQM). Doctoral thesis, University of Koblenz-Landau, 2011, p. 38.

That is why OQM does not start with yet more programmes, but with the conditions in which people can flourish – with the minimum factor.

## Why working conditions and collaboration belong together.

These sources describe the sector, not an OQM effect. Regions, data periods and populations differ. Our discussion examples suggest possible organisational starting points.

## Questions before taking the first step

### Can OQM support a care service or charitable organisation?

Yes, the approach can support organisational development for adult leadership and staff teams in home care, residential care, hospice teams and social services. We clarify the unit and version from your working context; a Christian provider does not oblige you to choose the Christian questionnaire.

### Which version suits staff who do not share Christian beliefs?

The worldview-neutral Business version is also an option for nonprofit and charitable organisations. It addresses leadership, structures, values and collaboration without personal Christian faith statements. The Christian version is a deliberate alternative for an appropriate team context. We agree the choice beforehand and do not arbitrarily change questions.

### Will an OQM analysis solve our staff shortage?

No. An analysis does not create posts, change funding or replace staffing assessment. It can help identify additional friction in collaboration and routines and focus on conditions you can change. Necessary staffing and resource decisions still remain.

### Are residents, patients or relatives surveyed?

Not in this team approach. The focus is adult staff and leaders who experience collaboration. Surveys of people receiving care or their relatives are separate projects requiring appropriate instruments and safeguards. Please also omit personal health or care information from the contact form.

### How can we begin while working shifts?

We agree accessible participation routes, a realistic window, clear information and feedback for different shifts. One defined working unit can be a useful start. Voluntary participation, confidentiality and identification risks in small groups are discussed beforehand.

### Is OQM a care-quality inspection or occupational risk assessment?

No. This OQM quality profile considers organisational conditions as experienced by the team. It is not clinical quality evidence or a substitute for required inspections or occupational risk assessment. Whether the separate OQM Health offer fits your context is clarified separately.

### Can we choose the Business questionnaire instead of the Christian version?

Yes. A Christian or nonprofit organisation can also choose the worldview-neutral Business questionnaire. The relevant team matters, not just provider identity. This version may better suit care, ministry or education teams with different beliefs. In a congregation, the Christian version may better reflect a shared spiritual calling. We clarify choice, voluntary participation and confidentiality beforehand; questions and results from different versions are not mixed without appropriate review.

### How much does OQM cost for churches and Christian organisations?

The same prices apply as for businesses. Use the price calculator on this page to work out your price; the annual package already includes one OQM 80 profile.

### Is this only for independent or free churches?

No. We address Christian organisations across denominations, including Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and free-church contexts. Before starting, we clarify terminology, working practices and questionnaire fit rather than assuming an identical application for everyone.

### Are these the same questions as in the business version?

No. The Christian OQM 80 version contains 80 questions across eight characteristics and explicitly addresses gifts, faith, spiritual culture and service. The business version uses different terminology and questions. The choice is clarified before a survey.

### Does OQM judge individual people’s faith?

Its purpose is organisational development through dialogue, not a ranking of personal devotion. The questionnaire includes personal faith statements, so voluntary participation, confidentiality and appropriate reporting must be agreed first. OQM does not replace pastoral care, safeguarding or responses to abuse and acute conflict.

### Is OQM an NCD product?

No. OQM has historical roots in Natural Church Development but is an independent offering today. We do not present a current partnership or imply that the questionnaires or products are identical.

### Does it guarantee more members or particular results?

No. OQM helps organisations consider conditions for collaboration and develop improvements together. Change depends on the context and implementation. Membership growth is not a guaranteed outcome of an analysis.

### Can the survey be used in English or Spanish?

This website explains the approach in three languages. The current Christian questionnaire underlying this area is German. Before commissioning, we clarify which approved language version is available and suitable for your organisation.

## Understand the roots. Work with today’s context.

OQM has historical roots in Natural Church Development (NCD). Today it is an independent offering with its own materials and support. This area is based on the current German OQM 80 question collection for Christian organisations, confirmed on 1 October 2026. Stephan Wesely’s dissertation (2011) documents the historical development and dialogue-based process.
