OQM-supported organizational consulting
Agriculture
The harvest window cannot wait for the team to settle every responsibility. Agricultural businesses need agreements that hold through weather changes, incoming seasonal colleagues and shifting volumes. OQM supports the organization of teamwork without replacing agronomic decisions or specialist safety procedures.
Discuss collaborationFor farms, producer organizations and cooperative teams. Arable farming, livestock and horticulture involve different technical work. The harvest example here concerns a fruit-and-vegetable business, not a universal operating procedure for agriculture.

Experience rooted in place and season
Experienced colleagues connect knowledge of the farm, crop and working sequence. They notice changes early and understand which tasks depend on each other. That knowledge becomes useful to the whole team when decisions are explained and newcomers receive appropriate support.
A tangible result shared across roles
Harvesting, grading and marketing work toward a concrete product. Feedback from a later stage can help earlier work. Producer organizations can share experience across businesses while respecting the independence and decision authority of each member.
Where strengths come under pressure
Short windows, changing teams
Seasonal colleagues arrive while operations are already busy. Experience, language and familiarity with this business vary. A general briefing is not the same as checking that each person understands their task and knows how to ask a question.
Family relationships and operating roles
Ownership, leadership and hands-on work may overlap on a family farm. Cooperatives balance shared planning and members' interests. Unclear authority can turn an organizational question into a personal disagreement before the underlying working arrangement is examined.

Business consulting for agriculture
- 1.4BWork across agrifood systems
Worldwide · 2023 · Approximate
FAO's June 2026 release reports nearly 1.4 billion people working in agrifood systems worldwide in 2023. This includes agricultural and off-farm activity, self-employment and informal work. It is not a count of employees working on farms alone.
FAO, 2026- 13.4 %Loss after harvest and before retail
Worldwide · 2024 · Estimate
FAO's September 2026 data map estimates a global 13.4% loss for 2024 after harvest and through storage, transport and processing before retail. Infrastructure and other causes are included; this is neither a measure of poor handovers alone nor evidence of an OQM effect.

Collaboration in everyday work
Make induction part of seasonal work
A brief introduction needs to fit the task, language and prior experience. Accessible questions and qualified safety instruction belong alongside it. Organizational development examines the availability of time and support; it does not certify machinery or specialist competence.
A question for your teamWho checks that a new colleague understands the task, limits and contact before work begins?
Carry a change through the working sequence
Weather or customer requirements may alter the day's priorities. Harvest, packing and marketing need the same confirmed direction rather than several competing versions. Not every change needs a meeting, but important changes need an identified recipient and confirmation.
A question for your teamHow does a revised harvest priority reach grading and marketing in time?
Use feedback without searching for blame
Produce is graded differently from what the team expected. Technical causes require specialist assessment; the team can also examine whether instructions, feedback and responsibility fitted together. Counting problems does not reveal whether colleagues can raise them early.
A question for your teamWhich feedback would actually help the previous stage on the next pass?
A harvest day changes
An illustrative vegetable business changes its daily priority because of the weather. Follow collaboration from harvest into grading and packing, not technical growing or storage advice.

Allocation
- Observation
- New seasonal colleagues know the work but not whom to ask about a revised assignment.
- Possible explanation
- Practical experience does not provide orientation in this particular organization.
- A next step
- Confirm the task, specialist limits and an accessible contact before the assignment.
Grading
- Observation
- The packhouse follows the old sequence while the new priority circulates informally.
- Possible explanation
- Planning changed without checking that the relevant teams received it.
- A next step
- A named role confirms the current sequence with harvest and packing.
Feedback
- Observation
- Questions from grading reach the harvest lead only at the end of the day.
- Possible explanation
- Information travels forward but cannot return in time to influence work.
- A next step
- Agree a direct contact for one recurring question and a short shared review.
OQM
Build teamwork that holds through the season
OQM connects an organizational profile with discussion of leadership, structures and collaboration as people experience them. Nature and market conditions remain separate influences. Organizational improvements need workplace testing.
The OQM methodResearch and originsDistinguish continuing and seasonal roles
Agree a suitable unit and survey timing. Short participation, language and identifiability in small groups matter. The same profile may not meaningfully represent every seasonal colleague's experience.
Bring experience into decisions
Leaders and colleagues interpret the profile through real working handovers. The minimum factor is not a judgment of individual performance. Ownership, employment-law questions and specialist decisions keep their appropriate authority.
Test one working agreement
A confirmed change route or dependable support for newcomers can be a first measure. Agree ownership and review. Consider weather and volumes when reviewing outcomes so differences are not prematurely attributed to OQM.
Hypothetical practical example
Every question goes to the farm manager
An illustrative producer's manager knows every workflow. Even routine organizational questions converge on the manager during the season, although experienced colleagues could answer some of them.
Working hypothesis
Responsibility that was never clearly delegated may constrain work more than individual effort.
- Which organizational questions can experienced colleagues answer with authority?
- Which tasks still require the manager or an authorized specialist?
Test in the organization
Agree a contact and decision limits for one defined working group. After several assignments, discuss whether questions received reliable answers.
A thought on collaboration
Experience serves the business best when others can act with it.
Questions from the sector
What business consulting does OQM offer agriculture?
OQM supports organizational development, leadership and collaboration in working teams. It does not replace crop planning, animal health, plant protection, machinery inspection or specialist legal advice.
Can a small family farm use OQM?
This can be assessed together. Team boundaries, anonymity and overlapping family and leadership roles need to fit the process. A small group is not automatically treated as an anonymous reporting unit.
How are seasonal colleagues considered?
Participation length, language, induction and survey timing are agreed beforehand. Not everyone has enough experience of the business to give meaningful profile responses. Reliable routes for questions remain important regardless.
Can OQM guarantee less food loss or higher yields?
No. Weather, specialist decisions, infrastructure and markets exert their own influence. FAO figures provide context; workplace measures and actual losses need separate assessment.
What should an initial enquiry include?
A broad description of the business, teams and organizational question is enough. Do not send personal employment information, health details, confidential supply contracts or sensitive operating information through the form.
