OQM-supported organizational consulting

Fashion and apparel

A garment sample works creatively, but fabric, construction and delivery planning are not yet aligned. Design, sourcing and production need more than a handover: people must know which version applies and who decides unresolved questions. OQM supports the collaboration behind those decisions.

Discuss collaboration

For apparel brands, design and product-development teams, garment manufacturers, sourcing and merchandising. In-house production and external supplier networks carry different responsibilities. The fiber statistics also cover other textile uses; the example concerns an illustrative apparel collection.

What the sector can build on

Design and making complement each other

Designers understand expression and fit; sample development and production know construction and practical constraints. Sourcing brings material availability and supplier relationships. A collection benefits from these perspectives when they meet before a commitment is made.

Samples hold practical experience

A physical sample reveals questions an abstract design may leave open. Experienced colleagues identify details that matter to the next role. Their knowledge becomes organizationally useful when it informs a confirmed version rather than remaining in a private conversation.

Where strengths come under pressure

Collection timing and necessary clarification

A fixed presentation or ordering date can encourage teams to treat unresolved questions as settled. A later fabric change requires the affected assumptions to be reviewed. The next role should not be left solely responsible for an earlier commitment that was never properly clarified.

One product, several working versions

Design, sourcing, sample teams and suppliers may work from different versions. Another communication channel does not automatically solve that problem. Teams need an authoritative position and a clear way to bring necessary professional changes back into the decision.

Textile Exchange estimates 139 million tonnes of fibers worldwide in 2025. Published 22 September 2026; includes home and technical textiles, not solely apparel.

The same report puts textile-to-textile recycled fibers at 0.76% of global fiber production in 2025. This is not all recycled fibers or recycled clothing.

Collaboration in everyday work

  1. Make sample decisions traceable

A sample attracts feedback about design, construction and materials. An accountable decision needs to combine these views and identify what has been confirmed. OQM considers the working and decision process, not the technical suitability of a fabric.

A question for your teamWho confirms the sample version that sourcing and production will use?

  2. Include suppliers at the right time

A change may be clear to one supplier but incomplete for another. Roles, contacts and unresolved questions need clarification before a handover. Contracts, specialist assessments and required evidence remain separate responsibilities.

A question for your teamHow does a supplier's question reach the responsible product decision?

  3. Preserve experience between collections

When only the next season matters, the same coordination problems can recur. A focused review of sample changes can improve the next working agreement. Experience should be shared without keeping every decision permanently with the most experienced colleague.

A question for your teamWhich recurring ambiguity can we resolve before the next collection deadline?

From an idea to a confirmed sample

An illustrative apparel team changes the fabric of an already discussed design. Three working moments show where a shared position needs to take shape.

Design

Observation
A new fabric is chosen, but the existing assumptions remain in the work order.
Possible explanation
The change is visible; its consequences have not yet been assessed together.
A next step
Identify affected roles and unresolved questions before renewing a commitment.

Sample

Observation
Design and sample colleagues give separate feedback; sourcing does not know the confirmed version.
Possible explanation
Professional knowledge is available, but a shared decision is missing.
A next step
An accountable role brings questions together and confirms the next sample position.

Handover

Observation
A partner works from an older version and raises questions late.
Possible explanation
The transition between organizations has not been sufficiently clarified.
A next step
Confirm the authoritative version, contact and question route at handover.

OQM

Develop the collaboration behind the collection

OQM examines leadership, structures and collaboration within an agreed unit. Global material figures supply context; the organization's own profile and dialogue inform its minimum factor.

The OQM methodResearch and origins
  1. Choose a meaningful working unit

Product development, sourcing and sample teams define the shared working reality to examine. External businesses retain their responsibilities and contracts. A unit is not formed solely around a single product or short-lived campaign.

  2. Understand professional feedback

The anonymous profile and shared discussion explore experienced direction, strengths and feedback. A typical sample change makes tensions concrete. Small groups and possible identification of individual responses are considered in advance.

  3. Try one approval agreement

The team can clarify ownership, a confirmed version and a question route for one sample process. Agree action and review. Material testing, supplier assurance and environmental claims need separate evidence; an organizational profile does not replace them.

Hypothetical practical example

New fabric, old work order

An illustrative apparel business changes fabric after its first sample discussion. Sourcing and manufacturing receive different feedback; the final decision remains in a conversation between two people.

Working hypothesis

Additional sample rounds may relate to unclear ownership of the authoritative version, not simply insufficient care in manufacturing.

  • Who combines affected professional feedback before the next commitment?
  • How does a supplier learn which version has actually been confirmed?

Test in the organization

For one recurring sample change, agree the decision, handover and accountable contact. Review together whether all roles could work from the same position.

A thought on collaboration

A design becomes workable together when material, sampling and making experience inform the decision in time.

Questions from the sector

What consulting does OQM offer fashion businesses?

OQM supports organizational development, leadership and collaboration among design, sourcing, product development and manufacturing. Technical materials advice, trend forecasting, brand strategy and supply-chain certification are not automatically included.

Do the fiber statistics prove our own sustainability?

No. Global fiber production and recycling shares do not assess your products or business. Environmental and material claims require separate evidence.

Does an organizational profile replace sample testing?

No. Fit, material suitability, product safety and quality remain with responsible specialists. OQM considers how the organization supports that work and uses professional feedback.

Can external garment suppliers take part?

This depends on the shared working reality and agreed unit. Separate businesses and mandates should not be combined into an arbitrary survey group. Participation and response protection are clarified beforehand.

What information do you need initially?

Product area, team structure and a general coordination question are enough. Do not send unpublished designs, confidential supplier terms, personal data or unsupported environmental claims.
